A 32-year-old undergraduate, Chizoba Nwabuwa, has been arrested by
officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for ingesting 25
wraps of male condoms filled with cocaine.
In a statement by the NDLEA's Head of Public Affiars, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the agency said the arrest was made at the newly upgraded Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State.
Head of the NDLEA, Enugu Aiport Command, Mr. Nsikak- Abasi Udoh, confirmed the arrest. He said, "Nwabuwa was arrested during the inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian flight from Brazil.
"The suspect excreted 25 wraps of a liquid substance that tested positive for cocaine, weighing 1.250kg. This is the first drug seizure to be made at the airport; it is exciting because we have just commenced operations."
Nwabuwa, who claimed to be a 400 level student of Fine and Applied Arts at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State said, "I wanted to use the N500, 000 they promised to pay me in developing my art gallery. They assured me in Brazil that authorities will not be able to detect liquid cocaine, so I was confident."
Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA Ahmadu Giade commended his men for the seizure.
He said, "The Agency accords high priority attention to all the nations' airports. We shall continue to improve our operations at the airports and prevent drug trafficking syndicates from using them."
